Any best practices for people search phone directories?

I'm working at a company, and we're building a portal to support employees and affiliates. I would like to know if anyone knows of best practices (or great examples) of employee phone directory applications.  If so, please let me know, as we are looking to improve our directory functionality, to make it really user-friendly.  Thanks much!
