Discussion topics? Hundreds... Healthcare IT a giant hairball of the intersection of several complex systems. Doctors are inherently non-creative and highly competitive due to their training which exacerbates the situation. To many times I have seen genius projects come out Carnegie Mellon only to have doctors say "we are not changing the way we work" . I would suggest, as a topic, the article posted in JAMA a few months ago on the almost "criminal nature" of Healthcare IT firms that are not held accountable for deplorable user experiences that are adding to the stress doctors already face. Healthcare IT puts the burden of usability on the user through the contracts. If you are having trouble, you need to purchase more training. I have seen doctors completed paralyzed by the systems they are sold... they are already the highest group of suicides in the country. I shouldn't have to click through 10 pages full of Win Form widgets and modal dialog after modal dialog to refill a prescription. I would hope to see some providers on here, demanding accountability from product vendors in this space.

It will be interesting to see the integrated elements of human factors, patient safety, and simulation learning emerge in our discussions.

Thanks Jeff! I hope some of the ideas shared by Amy and myself are of value to those in the UX discipline for creating positive change in the health care system.

I recently interviewed the Principal of Health Care at the User Experience firm Mad*Pow in New Hampshire on "Patient-Centric Design" http://jeffparks.ca/index.php/show-notes/patient-centric-design/ Thought this conversation might be of interest / value to the group. Cheers!
