The Value of Being Certified or "The Proof is in the Pudding"

I earned my certification in July. I say earned because they don't give the certification away and you can't buy it. In addition to that I paid for the courses myself. Today is my last day on a…Continue

I am getting ready to sign-up for the Fast-track training, probably tomorrow (self-pay, ouch, but I know it will be worth it). What suggestions would you have to optimize my learning. I think the most…Continue

The Value of Being Certified or "The Proof is in the Pudding"

I earned my certification in July. I say earned because they don't give the certification away and you can't buy it. In addition to that I paid for the courses myself. Today is my last day on a project that has returned more in earnings than whatthe courses cost me. I was contacted by a recruiter “out of the blue” for thisposition because of my certification. I secured this project because of what Ican deliver. As I was reflecting on what I will do next week, the phone rang once again. Itwas a…See More

TSSG, Congratulations on your certification! I agree there are no shortcuts. I took the FastTrack in July and passed the certification on my first attempt. For me, the courses "gelled" 10 years of practical experience with a larger…

Hi Art I did not do anything different for clearing my CUA and will also not try to do anything different for future qualifications. I also see no shortcuts. Fundamentals should be in place, apply common sense, think analytically and put oneself in…

The other day I had the thought that "not" bringing usability into the picture..."leaves money on the table". Every company wants to maximize profits and never, never, never "leave money on the table". Viewing usability…

Art, Yes it'll do you good if you keep some sticky notes & highlighter handy when you're revising. But more importantly create a TOC. This is really useful. All the best! Sindhu

Guy, Great to meet you. I must say the smartest thing I ever did was take the course and certification. I just left a 3rd round job interview as a visual designer. What I pitch is that my visual design solutions are coming from the standpoint of a…

Art, I realize you started this thread a month ago--have you already had your training? I took the Fast-track training and passed the exam this year (self-pay, too, which focuses the mind remarkably). You're getting a lot of good advice…

2 certify or not 2 certify...

Please share your comments with me. I am trying to figure out the areas where becoming a CUA will make a difference in landing my next job. Here's a little about me to help you in offering your comments since I believe we are all different and it's the sum total of what we've done that shapes our value. I have an A.A. in graphic design from the...errrr...70's something. I was an Art Director for 5 years, the an Advertising Photographer for 17. In 1995 I went back to my roots as a designer to become a Creative Director for a dot com. Then I was a Sr. Designer for a couple of consultant firms. For the last 7 1/2 years I was the Creative Director for a non profit where I fell in love with UX / UI / IA. I have no formal training in HCI, however I am working on completing my B.S. in Psychology and then on to a M.S. I am addicted to reading any book I can get my hands on.

There is no doubt in my mind I have been bitten by the love bug of HCI. I won't finish my B.S. until September of 2011. I am thinking about taking the fast track in November.

So, my question is given my work experience background what kind of a difference do you think me being a CUA have in my job search. I know it all depends on a bunch of variables but what is your two cents for me. I am open to your thoughts...teach me Obi Wan!

Hi Art, I am certainly open to meeting for a cup of coffee sometime. I work right near Costco in Irvine. I have to say up front that I am not a CUA, I have a MS in Human Factors and while in school I focused my studies in the area of usability testing. I would be happy to talk with you about my experiences while job hunting last year.

Cheers,

Deborah
