I just wanted to comment about Banks. Surprisingly there are some significant fan pages for bank services. Visa 180,000 followers, Citibank similar. They tend focus on consumer services that people do like to chat about. I notice Citibank has a…

Job Title
CEO and Head of the HFI Laboratories

About me...

I'm the CEO of HFI.
BA Clark U in Psych, and MS/PhD from Steven's in Applied Psych/Human Performance.
In the User Experience field since 1979.
Started at AT&T Long Lines and Bell Labs.
Now at helm of HFI since 1981.... good grief!

I still do the global CEO strategy and such. But Jay More runs the overall operation day-to-day. I spend most of my time with a few interesting clients, and as head of the HFI Laboratories. I do the HFI methods, standards, tools, new courses, and breakthrough ideas. For clients I work on institutionalization of usability, offshore usability, and cutting edge projects (now mostly persuasion, innovation, and a mix of persuasion AND innovation). I've also been helping to roll out the new PET Design class.

Personal stuff: I spend most of my time in Asia now, though go around the world often. You will often find me in Pondicherry India (happy to help people touring the subcontinent). HFI ALWAYS has an office open somewhere; but I take time for Trancendental Mediation (2hrs a day for over 35 years now), SCUBA, Ballroom Dance (and tango!), and Blues/Rock Guitar/Vocals/Harmonica.

5 UX Meltdowns and how to avoid them - video and transcript

The user experience field dates back to World War II and standing on the subsequent three generations of experience we should be able to avoid most meltdowns. We can.  But it doesn’t always happen.

And I ‘d like to share with you 5 meltdown stories and how and how you can avoid them.

LETS TALK ABOUT DESIGN

I was meeting with an…

The Prime Challenge with Mobile

I worked at Bell Labs in Whippany, just down the hall from the team that developed cellular phone technology.  They were mostly ham radio operators (and helped me get my license KA2THY).  Those guys had no clue what a revolution they would spawn. And now, that technology is driving huge shifts in lifestyle, commerce, and industry worldwide.

At HFI we get to work on mobile device design, and application design, in every market and domain you can imagine. We work on 3D…

Does UX Enterprise Work?

First Example:

Today our office in Mumbai called me in to look at a project plan to create public banking sites for an important client.  During the last 10 years we have done over 20 projects for this client.  And they had asked us to develop their next generation of unauthenticated sites.  The project had…

  • What is user experience?
  • What does it mean to have the CUA and CXA designations?
  • Why does a person have to be a CUA to take the CXA…

Good idea Eric. I was about to blog about this course, and what I think I can use... in Dutch, but I shall definitely put an excerpt of it here.

FANTASTIC!!! is the only expression almost everyone had at your classes at PET in Bangalore. I first was very curious, how is it possible to even teach a complex EMOTION and on top of it to build a TRUST!!!! But the way you (and your 20 people team) have systematically handled the coverage of all these aspects of PET is just fabulous.

There was enormous to learn, in a span of 3 days. The Learning curve never declined because of your Thoughtful logical intervals.

I am sure every one that would enroll your classes is going to benefit a lot in LIFE>

Best wishes.

Hi Eric, Thank you for the 3 days of mind blowing experience at PET session. Now, when ever I come across any advertisement online/offline or a messaging in a website...I see myself saying ' ah! Now they are conditioning, using contrast and scarcity'... :)

It was one of the best trainings I have gone through in recent times! Looking for more such trainings...!

Thanks Eric, great to hear from you :)
Things here at RBC are very good. I think we've definately moved the needle for the institutionalization UCD. We've integrated UX into our project management framework. We've got a great team of 5 Human Factors Specialists/Information Architects who work on our projects, and we've started our own internal mobile usability test lab. The HFI OLB interface is aging though and is going to be getting a facelift soon! Still lots we want to do...
Sounds like you are keeping well and busy, hopefully some of us will be able to attend the Toronto PET course soon.
All the best for the 2009, it should be an interesting year...
