Usability of Electronic Medical Records

We are pleased to report on a recent paper we wrote that summarizes user experiences with Electronic Medical Records (EMR) systems. Implementing EMRs is a popular solution to high health care costs, with the side benefit of providing better care. Unfortunately, 30% of EMR implementations fail, often because physicians cannot use the EMRs efficiently.

User inefficiencies emerge from a fundamental mismatch between the style of work of physicians and the tools and task flows offered by… Continue

John, Do you know of any EMR vendors that could use a CUA/ RN? I'd like to use my duo skills. (I left a post Dec. 17th)

John, you could not be more right about the needs of different users roles within the hospital setting. I have been an RN for 20 years, then a Nurse Clinical Sysyems Analyst for a large hospital starting EMR (Eclipsys) and now a CUA (web design). Our physicians requested 1:1 training mainly because they are an older generation with fair computer skills. The root cause was not the system, it was limited computer skills and embarrassement of not wanting others to know of their limitations. Typically MD's have higher prestigous level but having a skilled computer young nurse aide sitting next to them on the computer made them feel inadequate. Also, Clinical Systems Analysts are not rained on usability. Wish I had been a Usability Analyst before creating an EMR as I could have done a MUCH better job for the hospital:(
